Grand is an understatement! This place is awe inspiring for sure. Great way to end Deb's portion of the trip. It was a very climactic final day on the road.
Deb and I got in to Tusayan, AZ, border town to the otherworldly attraction, last night around sunset, and just hung around town, desperate for some real food. Unfortunately, despite being the border town to such a huge tourist magnet, the town didn't have much to offer in the way of healthy/regular paced food (as opposed to fast food of course!)
This morning we woke up and headed straight for the canyon, starting off at Mather Viewpoint and walking probably 4.5 to 5 miles along the rim of the canyon, enjoying the vast chunk out of the earth's crust. She and I both were suffering some serious anxiety with all of the people - mostly kids - jumping all around right on the rim, no railings, goofing off. You have to wonder what their parents are thinking, letting them run on the rim of a canyon so huge. We asked a ranger if people fall over, he pretty much laughed at the question. #1 reason for fatalities. Duh. Mostly from people goofing off, trying to get silly pictures. We had our fair share of first hand experiences with that (some Germans were posing in breakdancing positions on rocks on the cliff..... seriously?!?!)
After the walk and some lunch we headed out on a scenic drive along the rim, stopping at viewpoints along the way. A couple had just gotten married down on a rock cliff overlooking the Colorado River and the canyon at one such viewpoint. Very romantic. We enjoyed sunset at Lipan Viewpoint before heading back into town for one more night of beds, before Deb is heading home and I am off to Utah.
